The Human Media Lab, located in Canada, is tasked with looking at and creating technologies in different and new ways which may be viable 10 to 20 years from now. Recently they have unveiled a teleconferencing hologram which project the user's three dimensional rendering into a cylindrical tube. This allows the viewer to be able to pick up on non-verbal communication cues and other nuances which are not visible in a 2D representation on a standard monitor.

"The technology Dr. Vertegaal and researchers at the Queen's Human Media Lab have developed is called telehuman and looks like something from the Star Trek holodeck. Two people simply stand in front of their own life-size cylindrical pods and talk to 3d hologram-like images of each other. Cameras capture and track 3d video and convert it into the life-size surround image."

Although the researchers correlate the display to a Star Trek Holodeck, it's really more Obi-Wan than Jen-Luc, don't ya think?
