Portabee has developed a 3D Printing kits meant for home use and a home use budget. The unit has a number of interesting features, including a 120x120x120 work area but also the ability to assemble or unassemble at will, for portability. The manufacture indicates the unit will set up in minutes and will fit in a laptop bag.
I'm thinking his little beauty may have my Christmas shopping done. Think of it. Pop it into a bag, drive over to the relatives. Set up and say, "Some Gramma, what would you like for Christmas? Cup? Bowl? Yoda Head?" The possibilities are endless.
The unit comes unassembled for $480 or assembled for $680.00 but the engineering and assembly looks fairly straight forward. Quite frankly, some kids toys are more intimidating
Maintenance cost look pretty decent with 1Kg spools of PLA going for $32 and 2Kg spools for $62.
