Disney Researchers explore the fabrication of custom optical elements using today’s 3D printing technology.
Scientist at Disney Research, Computational Design Lab and HCI Institute are working on ways to use current 3D Printing technology to print custom optical elements at home and insert them into other items or 3D printed devices.
"3D printing is becoming increasingly capable and affordable. We envision a future world where interactive devices can be printed rather than assembled; a world where a device with active components is created as a single object, rather than a case enclosing circuit boards and individually assembled parts.
The process used "light pipes" a plexiglass like material called VeroClear and a whole lot of know how to fabricate from multiple materials to form active functional components within a single 3D print.
A host of consumer-level 3D printing devices are now available and the fundamental photopolymer printing technology behind Printed Optics has been demonstrated for less than $200 parts cost. It is reasonable to expect that inexpensive optical 3D printers will be available to researchers in the very near future.
