Microsoft has been researching some incredible new technology using augmented reality and 3D. Its called the MirageTable, and its really awesome.
The system uses Microsoft's Kinect to capture objects (and you) in 3D, plus track your head so it knows where you are looking. Then, a stereoscopic 3D projector is used to display the images back to you on a simple display (a piece of white paper in this case). You can then interact with and manipulate objects in virtual space, in full 3D. Crazy, huh?
These displays can also be networked together. Want to show your buddy your awesome new sunglasses? Put them on the table and he will be able to interact with them in virtual 3D, all while he is at his own home.
This is just a research project, so don't get too exited (Obi-Wan isn't coming to your living room any time soon). But, it makes you realize what incredible technology is just around the corner.
Watch the videos below for the explanation and see how it works. Don't forget, the images you are seeing are in 2D. If you were actually using the MirageTable you would have 3D glasses on and everything would look much more realistic and not so fuzzy.
