While this is not a new idea (you’ve been able to do it with a Xbox Kinect camera for quite a while now), Matterport’s device is extremely user-friendly and professionally built in the USA.
The part thats really cool is the software. You can’t do much with a camera if you can’t view and edit the content with ease, so Matterport made sure to have that covered. Connect your iPad 4 or higher to the 3D camera and you will be able to upload all your scanning information to the cloud, with access from anywhere (Matterport made a sweet online viewer).
“The Matterport Cloud Processor analyzes the 3D data to create a complete mesh that includes all rooms and then overlays the 2D images onto the mesh to create a realistic, textured 3D model of an entire space. The algorithms that power the solution are highly versatile and can handle a wide variety of situations.”
Not only that, you can edit the space and change wall colors, carpet styles, and even add furniture with Matterport Studio. Then simply re-upload and share it with your friends or co-workers.
The Matterport 3D Camera MC200 is ready for pre-order right now. Actually, they are hoping to start shipping units this month. At $4500, the MC200 is out of the price range of most home users, but hopefully the guys at Matterport will maker a cheaper version for us 3D geeks sometime soon.
