Portable 3D scanners like the ones from Faro are saving police time and money, while preserving a perfect crime scene for the jury.
WESH on Orlando, Florida recently report on how local police are using portable 3D scanners to map crimes scenes for later analysis. Instead of a team of officers on site to painstakingly measure catalog every fraction of an inch of a crime scene. They are setting up portable scanners to quickly map an exact 360 degree 3D image of the scene which can later be referenced with precise detail.
Quote:"FLY THROUGH THE CRIME SCENE IN A 360 VIEW. YOU CAN SEE DETAILS OF ITEMS THAT YOU WOULD OTHERWISE ONLY BE ABLE TO SEE IN PHOTOGRAPHS. TRADITIONAL SCENE ANALYSIS IS A LENGTHY PROCESS. HUNDREDS OF PICTURES, MEASURE AMS, SCRATCHES. THESE SCANNERS CAB CAPTURE THE ENTIRE SCENE. IT IS SAVING MAN HOURS. NOT ONLY THAT IT'S GIVING PRECISE MEASUREMENTS WE CAN GO BACK. BY LOOKING AT THIS MAPPING BE ABLE TO TAKE TIME AND TIME AGAIN."
Once done with the map, detectives, lawyers and the like can easily recreate the scene at a later date. I suppose, you could even 3D print a specific section of the scene if need be. Cost saving, accurate and reproducible - have to love it. Now if only they can help me remember where I left my car keys.
