At the latest TED conference (Technology, Entertainment, Design) Jinha Lee showed off his hardware which allows users to interact with their PC's in a 3D Space.
Taking the gesture system that we all know and love now to a new level, the Spacetop 3D Desktop lets you literally reach into the computing environment.
Spacetop 3D Desktop uses a transparent LED screen with cameras create an environment that you can reach into - or rather around into. You can then manipulate objects in that environment, while the camera tracks your eye position to make sure everything lines up nice and tidy in the 3D space. Cool, huh?
This could be quite an advantage for something like an architect or cad designer, who could just reach in and tweak their design at will, rather than a series of complex mouse / keyboard command. Also, you'd have to love it in the gaming world. Think of something like Wack-a-mole or a boxing game and don;t tell me that I was the only one who saw this and thought, "Yes! Finally 3D Chess. Bring it, Spock!" (Well Ok, maybe I was. But it's still a valid point.)
While looking at the initial design though, I couldn't help thinking that while the monitor system works, projection would be more elegant - You could reach though instead of around. Perhaps that is in the works for the future, but either way, I want one!
