It seems virtually every day we hear of a new thing 3D printing can do, from providing a child with a new arm or one that even shoots glitter to giving a turtle or macaw new beaks to printing cartilage during surgery. But a usable bridge 3D printed out of steel? That's a new one.
MX3D is located in Amsterdam, Holland, and they've recently announced their newest 3D printing project: a bridge that will span the Oudezijds Achterburgwal canal. They expect to complete the project by 2017, and when they're done it will be completely usable as a means of crossing the canal. The project was originated as a means of showcasing MX3D's multi-axis 3D print technology, which instead of limiting printed objects to what fits inside a box can be used in the open to create large-scale objects with varying materials.
The bridge will be printed using 6-axis industrial robots, and will be made of steel. As the video below explains, they had some issues at first, but then what groundbreaking technology didn't? Eventually they were able to work out all the bugs and end up with something that not only can, but will, change the way the world thinks about 3D printing's capabilities.
Of course, a project as large and complex as this one does not happen in a vaccum. MX3D has teamed up with Autodesk, Heijmans, Arcelor Mittal, Air Liquide sponsors, ABB robotics, STV, Delcam, Within, Lenovo, public partners TU Delft, AMS, and the Amsterdam City Council to make it happen. And let us not forget one of the more important people involved... the bridge's designer, Joris Laarman Lab.
It will be interesting to see as the project progresses exactly how it works out in the real world. MX3D opened their new workshop last fall just for this project, and it was a resounding success. In the words of MX3D, they feel, "Printing a functional, life-size bridge is of course the ideal way to demonstrate the endless possibilities of this technique.” I can't help but agree.
