How 3D printing helped put young Violet on a road to recovery.
2 year old Violet Pietrok was born with Tessier cleft which left he several deformed.
For this rare condition, corrective surgery would be dangerous and complex so the family turned to and Dr. John Meara, at Boston Children's Hospital.
Quote:"He warned them of the danger of making sophisticated cuts through the skull, very close to the optic nerve. "They might be very close to the brain," Meara explained in an interview. "So the ability to make these cuts on the model first and see the trajectory of a sawblade or where that cut would come through in relationship to the eye is absolutely critical."
3DPrinting has been used in many medical cases to help with exoskeleton arms , ears or even puppy bones. However, in this case, Dr. Meara and his team used multiple MRI's to create a 3D image then made a 3D print of Violets face and skull parts since something like cadaver practice would not be possible.
After practice on the models, the team felt the were ready to take on the unique challenge of this operation. They also kept a model handy in the operating room for reference. By all accounts it was a huge success. Although little Violet will need many more, this is a great first successful step in her reconstruction.
The other awesome part of this heart warming story is the methods used a re reproducible and can be extended to not only rare facial reconstruction but with almost any complicated surgery. This in turn will reduce table time, errors and should help in increase overall recovery time and success.
Pretty awesome.
